Chief System Architect, High Voltage Drives

Stuttgart area, GermanyRef 253

A global industrial automation and drive systems manufacturer building its European product organisation

We are recruiting a chief system architect for high voltage drives at a global industrial automation and drive systems manufacturer. This is the top-level technical role for the drive platform: what the next generation is, how it is built, and how one architecture serves markets with very different grids and standards.

It is a technical director's brief rather than a lead engineer's. The person who takes it sets the roadmap and then has to make the organisation build to it.

What you would do

  • Lead the top-level architectural design for high voltage drives and deliver competitive architecture solutions.
  • Define the killer features, the architecture and the system engineering for the next generation of multi-drive products, and the positioning for the generation after it.
  • Set the medium and long term technical roadmap for variable frequency drives, and resolve the system-level problems the market keeps running into.
  • Build the three year plan for the overseas high voltage drive range.
  • Bring digitalisation and AI into the products: intelligent, data-driven solutions for equipment, production lines and hybrid products.
  • Standardise the technical platform so it is modular, consistent and reusable across projects.
  • Make sure the designs meet global compliance and certification requirements.
  • Mentor the senior technical people and grow at least one system engineer a year.

What you would bring

  • Ten years or more in system engineering, architecture design or product planning in drives or inverters.
  • A proven record with variable frequency drives, high voltage drives or large drive systems.
  • Command of hardware topology, power electronics design, rectifier and inverter systems, cabinet-level systems and control architecture, and of how grids differ around the world.
  • Familiarity with embedded software, neural networks, data architecture and product configurator management.
  • A deep understanding of global compliance and certification for multi-drive systems.
  • Cross-cultural communication and the confidence to lead technical alignment across countries.

The practicalities

  • Based at the European research and development centre in the Stuttgart area.
  • Permanent.
  • International travel, including to the group's engineering centres.
