A tier-one powertrain builder saying publicly that it is still weighing GaN against SiC is the part worth noticing. An open device decision means application engineering hires rather than production ones, and it means them now rather than at start of production. The people who can run that comparison are the scarce ones: engineers who have taken both technologies through qualification on a real vehicle programme, not just characterised parts on a bench. They are rarely on the market, and a programme staffing up for this usually moves someone out of a device maker rather than out of another carmaker.

Humanoid robotics is currently hiring out of automotive, and this is why. The compute, sensing and functional safety problems are recognisably the same as an autonomous vehicle, so a robotics start-up can shortcut years by taking people who have already shipped a safety-rated system. For automotive employers that is a retention question, not an abstract one. The engineers most likely to be approached are the ones who have taken a system through certification, and they are exactly the ones hardest to replace.

AI Is Forcing Data Centers To Rethink Trust
Hardware security is becoming a first-class hiring requirement rather than a specialism bolted on at the end. Chip identity, firmware integrity and post-quantum readiness are all being asked for now, and they sit awkwardly between the security world and the silicon world. The practical difficulty is that most people with real cryptographic depth have never worked at the hardware level, and most hardware engineers treat security as somebody else's job. The small number who bridge that are being competed for by semiconductor firms and data centre operators at the same time.

What Can Go Wrong In 800VDC AI Data Centers
800V distribution in the data centre is power electronics arriving in a market that has never hired for it. Arc faults, hot swap and protection coordination are ordinary questions in traction and industrial drives, and quite new to people who have spent their careers at 48V. That gap is an opportunity rather than a problem. The engineers who already know this work in automotive and industrial power, not in computing, and most have never had a call from a data centre business. It is one of the few places right now where a well-argued approach lands with someone who was not expecting it.

Integration is quietly changing what a power hire looks like. When the FET, the driver and the protection arrive in one part, the customer no longer needs someone who can lay out a discrete gate drive, and starts needing someone who can argue about thermals, control and system cost. We see this in the briefs. Motor drive roles that would once have asked for discrete power design now ask for system-level judgement and firmware literacy, and the candidates who have made that shift are worth more than their job titles suggest.

Field Plate Optimization in GaN Power HEMTs
Field plate design is the sort of work that separates a GaN device team from a GaN device supplier. It is deep physics, it decides breakdown voltage and long-term reliability, and it cannot be learned quickly on the job. Europe has a genuine shortage here. When a client asks for a GaN device engineer with real field plate and reliability experience, the honest answer is usually that there are perhaps fifteen credible people and most are working for the competitor they want to hire from.

The interesting word here is not GaN, it is American. Moving a GaN process onto a US foundry line creates a category of role that barely existed a year ago: process integration and device engineers who know wide bandgap and are already inside the United States. That pool is small and it is being drawn on by everyone onshoring at once. European employers competing for the same people should assume the American offer is materially higher, because for these roles it usually is.

Buying an integrated voltage regulator business is a bet that power delivery moves onto the die, and that changes who a power company needs to employ. Vertical power delivery sits between the power electronics engineer and the chip designer, and very few people are genuinely comfortable on both sides of that line. Acquisitions like this are also the moment good people become reachable. Integration unsettles reporting lines and roadmaps, and the six months after an announcement are when engineers who were previously immovable will take a call.

Rad-hard power is one of the smallest talent pools we work in. Qualifying a MOSFET or a GaN device for a space mission is slow and documentation-heavy, and the engineers who have carried one end to end across Europe can be counted in dozens. When a programme like this is announced, the people named on it become the target list for every other space power programme within a month. If you are hiring in this area, the useful move is to have spoken to them before the announcement rather than after it.
