Delta Integrates 800-VDC Power and Cooling for AI Factories

What it means for hiring

Delta Electronics has set out an 800 V DC power and cooling architecture for AI data centres built around NVIDIA's DSX AI Factory reference platform. It runs from onsite energy and storage through solid-state transformers and facility distribution down to DC-DC conversion at the rack and the board, with up to 98 percent conversion efficiency, up to 98.5 percent at board level, and in-row power racks of up to 800 kW. Liquid cooling units of 2.4 MW and 3 MW sit alongside, and the whole thing is offered as a prefabricated modular data centre that can be expanded in phases.

Delta is selling power, cooling and the building as one product, and that changes who it needs to hire. A power supply company used to need power electronics designers; a company delivering a prefabricated 800 V DC data centre also needs thermal and liquid cooling engineers, medium-voltage and protection engineers, controls people who can keep a rack stable through GPU load transients, and project engineers who can commission a site. Delta, ABB, Vertiv, Schneider and Eaton are now competing for the same combination of skills, and very few engineers have all of it. Employers will hire specialists and put them in mixed teams, which means the engineers who can talk across power, thermal and controls will be worth the most.
