Nexperia and Tata Electronics partner on semiconductor manufacturing in India

Nexperia has signed a strategic partnership with Tata Electronics covering wafer fabrication, assembly and test, technology development and the wider supply ecosystem in India. Tata's 300mm fab in Dholera, Gujarat will make MOSFETs from Nexperia's portfolio, and its facility in Jagiroad, Assam will assemble and test Nexperia's discrete products. Tata is investing a combined 14 billion dollars in the two sites, which it describes as India's first commercial semiconductor fab and first home-grown assembly and test plant.
For a supplier whose European and Chinese operations have been pulled in different directions, a second manufacturing base is about resilience, and resilience is built by engineers. Transferring a MOSFET process into a new 300mm fab takes process integration, device and yield engineers who know the product family well enough to requalify it, and automotive customers will insist on a full qualification before they accept parts from a new site. Much of that knowledge sits in Hamburg and Manchester today. Expect demand for process transfer, quality and customer qualification engineers who can work between Europe and India, and for European discrete specialists who are willing to spend long periods on site while a fab ramps.
