A tier-one powertrain builder saying publicly that it is still weighing GaN against SiC is the part worth noticing. An open device decision means application engineering hires rather than production ones, and it means them now rather than at start of production.

The people who can run that comparison are the scarce ones: engineers who have taken both technologies through qualification on a real vehicle programme, not just characterised parts on a bench. They are rarely on the market, and a programme staffing up for this usually moves someone out of a device maker rather than out of another carmaker.
