NineDot Energy is building a battery storage site of nearly 20 MW at Hunts Point in the Bronx, on land that used to be a fuel oil trucking yard. It will be able to supply about 20,000 homes at peak times, support Con Edison's distribution network, and reduce the need for gas-fired peaker plants, with full operation expected in summer 2027. NineDot already runs 39 MW across eleven projects in Staten Island and the Bronx, has more than 60 projects and over a gigawatt in its pipeline, and aims to have 400 MW operating, under construction or in development this year.
The story is in New York but the pattern is the same in Germany, the UK and the Netherlands: storage is moving from a few large grid-scale sites to many smaller ones inside cities, each with its own grid connection, permits and fire safety case. That changes the work from building one project to running a programme of dozens. Developers need grid connection and interconnection engineers, battery system and fire safety specialists, and commissioning engineers willing to move between sites, and utilities need people to approve them. Engineers from solar and wind development have most of the skills, and storage developers that can offer a steady pipeline of projects will find them easier to win.

This is one of the markets we recruit in every day. Energy storage and solar are power electronics markets wearing different clothes. Inverters, PCS and grid-tie hardware draw on the same engineering and often the same people, which is why searches here reach into the power semiconductor pool.
