What it means for hiring

ST's VD56GA is a 1.1 megapixel sensor for the infrared cameras that watch the driver and the cabin, and ST is plain about the market it wants: in-cabin sensing moving out of premium cars and onto high-volume platforms. Its new backside-illuminated pixel claims close to sixty percent more near-infrared sensitivity than the previous generation and thirty-five percent more sharpness. Front-end manufacturing is at Crolles in France, and samples are out now. The timing is not an accident. Europe's General Safety Regulation makes a driver distraction warning compulsory on every new car registered from July 2026.

A driver monitoring system on a luxury model could be carried by a small expert team with a generous bill of materials. On a volume platform the same function gets a cheaper sensor, a smaller illuminator and less compute, and it still has to work for every face, every pair of glasses and every low winter sun, then be proven to a type approval authority. That moves the difficult hiring away from algorithm research and towards the camera system engineers who tune near-infrared optics and illumination, and the validation engineers who can build the test data and defend the result. Tier ones will find the people who shipped one premium programme are the people every volume programme now wants. A camera engineer from consumer devices who knows near infrared is often a better hire than waiting for an automotive CV that is already taken.

Hiring in automotive electronics?

This is one of the markets we recruit in every day. Electrification has pulled power electronics and automotive into the same hiring market, and the people who can work across both are scarce. Traction inverters, on-board chargers and battery management sit exactly on that seam.
