ST SiC Technology Enables 400 kW DG Matrix Interport Platform

What it means for hiring

DG Matrix, which builds the Interport multi-port solid-state transformer, has doubled the platform from 200 kW to 400 kW in essentially the same footprint by moving to STMicroelectronics' third-generation silicon carbide MOSFETs, with system efficiency above 98.5 percent. Interport is aimed at data centre power, 800 V DC architectures, utility microgrids and electrification projects. DG Matrix's co-founder and CTO, Subhashish Bhattacharya, is a founding faculty member of the FREEDM Systems Center and PowerAmerica.

Solid-state transformers have been a research topic for twenty years, and AI data centres are what is turning them into products. Doubling power in the same box is a device, magnetics and thermal problem at once: medium-frequency transformer design, silicon carbide gate driving and protection, and packaging that can shed the heat. The people who can do it mostly came out of university power electronics centres like FREEDM, or out of traction and solar inverter teams. Start-ups like DG Matrix compete with ABB, Delta and the silicon carbide suppliers' own application labs for the same small group, and they tend to win on scope and equity rather than salary.
